Dwarf Tomato Project: Variety Repertory

31/01/2023
Association Tomatofifou

Update March 2023

Despite the announcement made by Craig LeHoullier, at the end of 2018, the project seems to be going strong. New Families have appeared as well as many varieties, note the arrival of "blue" cultivars from the very recent Gondwana series.

All these novelties are described below and have been incorporated in the article.

End of January 2019 update

"December 31, 2018 saw the "official end" of the Dwarf Tomato Breeding Project. We now have over 100 varieties placed in seed catalogs, and 14 years after the beginning, it is time to wind it down. We are finishing up some loose ends…for all who participated, thank you so much - we have a project to be really proud of." Craig LeHoulier

"December 31, 2018 marked the "official end" of the Dwarf Tomato Project. We now have over 100 varieties placed in seed catalogs, and 14 years after the start, it's time to cut them down. We're finishing up some details … for everyone who participated, thank you so much - we can be really proud of our project."

Craig LeHoullier announced in his newsletter at the beginning of the year the official end of the project, but at the end of January, 18 new varieties from the project are appearing…These are available exclusively in the USA and on the VictorySeeds website. The previous years the new varieties were available on 3 different sites that shared their distribution throughout the world. With this new batch we return a little to the fundamentals of the project with a majority of cultivar of medium and big size. We also have 3 new families: Harmony - Fancy and Dainty.

All these new features are described below and have been incorporated into the article.

February 2018 update

At the beginning of this year appearance of 24 new varieties, some of which come from 6 families previously unknown and whose information about them without succinct. These new lines are: Cheerful - Wishful - Softy - Leggy - Kiwi and Ivalde.

Change of philosophy or adaptation to the needs of the market, always is that with this last arrival the initial concept: "to obtain a dwarf variety with big fruits" passes to the trap door! In fact, no less than 8 cherry/cocktail type varieties have made their appearance. Innovation also with 2 "paste" flesh cultivars: 'Sneaky Sauce' and 'Sauce Mary'.

All these novelties are described below and have been incorporated in the article.

                                              ***

It is now a dozen years since this project was born and new cultivars increase year by year the collection, in this beginning of 2018 we count about 90. It would be interesting to make a precise inventory of all these varieties and to establish the genealogy.

fred tie dye 11 juillet 2015

It was in 2005 that this project was born from the association of & nbsp; Two enthusiasts: Patricia Nuske Small, Australia, and Craig Lehouillier, USA. The purpose of this union was to create a collection of new dwarf varieties producing large fruits, various colors according to the example of the "creation" of & nbsp; new big dwarf: & nbsp; crossing a dwarf variety with a large fruit variety in order to obtain a variety Dwarf with large fruits. Thanks to a hundred volunteers recruited from the "Tomatoville" forum, the project started with the realization of the first crosses in 2006.

It is important to note that it was the very first world -class project for the reproduction of tomatoes that do not imply any botanist or horticultural but simply volunteer gardeners eager to learn genetics and discover new varieties.
