Variety brought to light by Joe Bratka who held the seeds of a grandmother in Germany. There is some controversy as to whether the current variety is really a "heirloom" or whether it was bred and developed by Joe Batka to meet the demand for heirloom varieties by gardeners. Featured in the Seed Savers Yearbook 2000.
Fruit 150-300 grams, round and noticeably flattened, slight rippling at the shoulders.
Original colour, purple-pink to black at the shoulders, remaining dark green, with broad greyish to black stripes along the body. Medium depression at the foot attachment, from which talwegs may emerge, trace of shapeless umbilicus. Tendency to crack at the start of the talwegs.
Dark red beefy flesh with a pleasant coreless texture, typical black flavour: complex, rich and smoky; one of the best blacks for some.
Controversy over the nature of the leaves for 'Sea Wind' they are said to be potato type and for 'Tatianatomatobase' they are said to be regular type!
